Kiwengwa Forest Reserve; a hidden gem in Zanzibar

Living in Zanzibar during the rainy season is quite an experience! I put on my pink dress and a big smile, embracing it all—rain or not, that’s my spirit. April’s downpours might be relentless, but I’ve found my groove, gazing out from the villa while reflecting on life. For me this season is about recharging. The rain turns everything into a lush, green painting outside my window—perfect for those introspective moments.

Even with the rain, you can still visit some great spots if you’re lucky with timing. The beach is still an option during those sunny breaks between showers—perfect for a quick dip or a stroll if the weather cooperates. But if you’re craving something beyond the shore, let me tell you about Kiwengwa Forest Reserve. Have you heard of it? It’s a gem worth exploring, especially during this season.

Kiwengwa Forest Reserve—or more accurately, the area around Kiwengwa and its natural wonders like the nearby Kiwengwa Forest Reserve—offers a different vibe. It’s about 13 km from Kiwengwa’s main beach strip, so it’s a bit of a trek, but doable. The forest reserve its a protected slice of nature with dense greenery, perfect for a rainy-day adventure. The rain makes it even more vibrant—think towering trees dripping with moisture, maybe even a glimpse of the rare red colobus monkeys if you’re lucky. It’s a cool escape from the usual beach routine, and the damp air gives it an almost mystical feel. You’d need a guide or a tour to make the most of it, though—roads can get messy this time of year.

So, Karibu Zanzibar- while I’m here in my pink dress, grinning at the rain-streaked view, I’d say mix it up. Hit the beach when the sun peeks out, and when it pours, head to the forest. It’s all about rolling with the season. What do you think—forest or beach first?
